Evaluate the winch size you need by determining the entire weight of your ground tackle. Then triple it. It's not so much the size of your boat that is important, because you aren't supposed to use your windlass as a bow tie down anyway. That is what your bow cleat or post is for. Please, never use your windlass to secure your anchor rode for an overnight - anywhere, nor use it to disengage your anchor nor ensure security while disengaging your anchor with your engines. The windlass is there to lift your ground tackle, primarily.
So if you have a 60 lb main anchor (usually your biggest one) and 250' 3/8" BBB chain (425 lbs), you have a total of 595 + 60 = 655 lbs ground tackle. Now triple it. You need 3 x 425 = 1275 lbs pull in your windlass. Th
The project 1500 from Lofrans is made feom Chrome plated bronze and is available in all stainless construction as well. It has a pulling power of 1,500 lbs so it would be perfect for the above described application. This is the one we will be using on Stone Age.
